Prepare for storm season – protect your home with Crimsafe

5 minutes read

Rest easy knowing that Crimsafe is protecting your home and family from storms and cyclones.

Severe storms and cyclones vary in intensity and can develop quickly, particularly in the late spring and summer months. In recent years the frequency and intensity of severe storms and tropical cyclones have increased*, posing significant threats to homes, particularly in cyclone-prone regions like Far North Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Cyclones aren’t always in these regions – in February-March 2025, Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred made its way down the Queensland coast to become a category 1 strength. Alfred causes significant damage to South East Queensland and northern NSW through damage winds and heavy rainfall.^

Crimsafe helped Margaret and Allen weather a sudden storm – and can protect your home too.

Severe storms can bring large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain. Margaret and Allen from Nambucca Heads in New South Wales experienced a sudden storm in May 2025.

A tree fell down near their home at the height of the storm, crashing into their window. Luckily, their glass was protected by a Crimsafe security screen window. Despite the tree falling onto Margaret and Allen’s home, the glass remained intact thanks to the Crimsafe security screen- protecting their family and home from shattered glass and water damage.

Margaret said that they had the Crimsafe security screens installed after a burglary a few years ago and they have been very happy with them ever since.

“Crimsafe was a great investment. Without Crimsafe we would have had a horrible mess in the back room after that storm. The Crimsafe screens have paid for themselves.”

As severe weather events become more common, it is crucial for homeowners to take proactive measures to protect their properties. The damage caused by high-speed wind and flying or falling debris can be devastating, leading to costly repairs.*

Crimsafe security screens act as a strong barrier against hailstones and wind-borne debris during a storm, helping to protect glass and windows.

Who can I trust to protect my windows during storms and cyclones?

Doors and windows are the hardest parts of your home to protect against the violent, debris-carrying winds of cyclones or severe storms. The Crimsafe range helps protect your home against hail and wind-borne debris.

Crimsafe has specially designed Cyclone Debris Screens that are approved for use in Cyclone regions C & D. The range features a special build-out installation to protect glass and is available in security screen doors, windows and Safe-S-Cape windows.

Crimsafe’s Cyclone Debris Screens can withstand:

  • wind gusts up to 392 km/hr
  • wind debris impacts up to 46 m/s.

How does Crimsafe test against cyclone and storm debris?

Crimsafe doesn’t just independently test our screens to meet Australian Standards, we by far exceed them by simulating real-world scenarios in the Crimpact Zone. Crimsafe security screens are rigorously put through the Cyclone Debris Test again and again, to measure its ability to withstand high-speed winds and storm debris.

What is a Cyclone Debris test?

The Cyclone Debris Screens Test (AS1170.2:2011) is conducted in two parts. An air cannon fires a missile at predetermined air pressures to generate the required impact speeds for Cyclone Regions C & D — Australia’s most heavily impacted storm regions — being 36 m/s and 46 m/s.

  1. The screen is impacted with a 4kg piece of timber fired from the air cannon
  2. The screen is impacted with an 8mm steel ball repeated five times in different areas of the screen.

Crimsafe Cyclone Debris Screens protect from wind gusts up to 392 km/hr and can withstand impact from flying debris up to 46 m/s. To give you an idea of how protective this strength is, a category 3 tropical cyclone can have destructive wind speeds from 165-224 km/hr, category 4 between 225-279 km/hr and a category 5 cyclone more than 280 km/hr.**

Our research and development team is continually advancing the limits of Crimsafe Cyclone Debris Screen performance in the Crimpact Zone.

What makes Crimsafe Australia’s strongest security screen?

Crimsafe is the only security screen with:

  • 0.9mm 304 structural grade Tensile Tuff® stainless steel woven mesh that is 26.5% thicker in cross-section than other security screens on the market. This means its ability to absorb impact energy better at high tensile levels makes it more appropriate for safety applications. The 0.9mm 304 grade mesh means it also passes the Knife Shear test.
  • Patented Screw Clamp® technology to secure Tensile Tuff® mesh to the frame with a vice like grip, absorbing large impacts that might happen during a storm.

Other screens on the market may use inferior weak plastic wedge or glue systems.
